Chef's Dinner Table and Read The Room present Running Through Trees: Songs & Poetry of Overcoming, by Johnny Perez. Each ticket includes two drinks!

Johnny Perez brought down the house at our last Read The Room literary salon in February, and now he is back with a full show of his work. Running Through Trees is a mashup of original songs and poetry drawing on Johnny’s own experience as the Mexican American son of a preacher in the South, exploring themes of love and loss, faith, forgiveness, fathers and sons, and the invincible power of the human spirit.

It is likely you have never before seen a show like this. Call it jazz poetry, call it poetic opera, call it a concert with spoken word. Some have even called it church. You will be swept up in the songs and perhaps even moved to tears by the poetry.

About the performers:

Johnny Perez is a lifelong writer, and some of these poems, dreams and visions have been with him for 50 years. Now as a singer/songwriter, spoken-word poet, and acoustic guitarist living in the West Village, Johnny has performed many of these pieces onstage at music venues, literary and poetry salons around New York and Washington DC. But this is the first time he has put them all together – songs with poetry – as a full “one-man” show.  Johnny’s musical style has been likened to ‘James Taylor with a Latin flair,’ as he plays fingerstyle acoustic guitar and many of his songs include verses in Spanish. His mixing of poetry over music hearkens back to the Harlem Renaissance, the Beat poets, and a good old-fashioned Gospel altar call. Prior to COVID, Johnny curated and hosted a weekly improvisational Jazz Poetry show at 11th Street Café in New York’s West Village. He is on IG @perezpoetry.
